It's hard to believe it's already July. With the monsoon season of June behind us we continue to wait for the Big Wood to drop just a bit more. The water is beginning to clear, and conditions are improving daily. The bug activity is also increasing and the fish are beginning to look up. We're starting to see some green drakes, pmd's and a variety of stoneflies, both large golden stones and the smaller yellow sally. With some more seasonal weather in store, the Big Wood should really start to come into shape in the next week. As the water continues to drop, we'll see dry fly fishing really pick up. Green drake patterns, large parachutes, stimulators and stoneflies will be the call. Drop a nymph behind these large dries for a deadly combination. Warm Springs and Trail Creek will follow suit and begin to provide some good action as-well. These smaller streams will provide easier access and are great options especially for the kids.
The flowers and scenery up in Copper basin are spectacular right now and these streams are also coming into nice fishing shape. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a day exploring these waters. Do not forget your bug spray if you head in this direction.
Silver Creek is fishing quite well with a plethora of bug activity. Pmd, baetis, and callibaetis all continue to be present and a good bug selection should be available. Being the best fishing option so far this season, these fish have seen a bit of pressure and presentation will be critical.
